On Coming Out as a Multi-Creative Person

Bright clouds, tinted orange by the sun. A rainbow can be seen in the middle.

Hello World! This is the beginning of my blog. While I have been using this website for quite a while now (3 years, it goes by so quickly!), I've never considered using it as a blog, mainly because I wanted to keep this place exclusively as my game music portfolio. But recently, I have made up my mind on something that was truly holding me back on my career... And that's my creativity.

The problem with being a total creative

OK, so I'll be using the term "Total Creative" for someone who is not only proficient in one or two areas, but truly wants/needs to do a LOT of other things to feel happy. One extreme example would be doing a whole film by themselves. Some other terms already exist, such as Multipotentialite, Polymath, or even the infamous Jack-of-all-trades. But while these terms do apply for people who have developed multiple skills, they still are not enough for my definition of a Total Creative. The closest term for this would be Jack-of-all-trades, but the Total Creative is not content with this, he or she truly wants to be a Master of All! And that's a problem in today's society...

We live in a world of specialists. While it does make sense from a utilitarian/survival point of view (You won't be having your heart surgery done by a cook, neither with a neurosurgeon, you'll go to a cardiac surgeon, even though all these people are very capable with a knife), this does have a taxing effect on creatives. We need to make money to pay rent, eat and live decently. What is the creative to do in such a case? The artist will paint, the musician will play and the writer will write. And even then, that's too general! There are Concept Artists as opposed to Fine Artists, there are Concert Composers as opposed to Media Composers, Fantasy Writers as opposed to Science Fiction Writers, and even still, that's not to say the niches within these types of creatives, such as a Creature vs an Environment Concept Artist! For someone who has a thirst for knowledge and loves to go crazy with their skills, having to choose and be put into one tiny box like these is truly overwhelming!

This creative kitten is about to explode from analysis paralysis

Not only that, but social media algorithms demand consistency of output. If a writer suddenly posted a painting, their post's reach would take a severe blow, because the algorithm is used to the writing content. If this keeps up, their entire account will be damaged, as the algorithm will become so confused it will not know to what audience this account's content is for.

That's when I remembered I have this website. My own little corner of the internet. I can do whatever I want here! It's my world. It's my creative business just as I envision it!

For quite a while now I have been forcing myself to do just music, but I was truly feeling unhappy with this. My anxiety skyrocketed, to the point of crippling me. But I've decided that this is enough. No one else will live my life but myself. I'm not just a music composer. I'm also a writer. I also love illustrating. I mean, I went to college for game development! I'm not just one single thing, but a multifaceted creative force, and I'm sure others can resonate with this!

What I decided

I'll be taking the plunge. The leap of faith. The madman stunt.

I have decided that, while I'll still offer creative services for people who might be interested in it, I won't limit myself to just music. I'll be doing the complete package as I get confident in my skills. From music for video games to film, to concept art and book covers, to absolutely anything else I can offer with quality to studios and individuals. It sounds stupid in a business sense, we all hear about having a niche... but honestly? It's better than being stuck.

Not only that, in the coming months I'll be rebuilding this website to be a hub for all my creative output. I may sound arrogant, but i'd like to keep this part somewhat secret for a while.

Thank you for reading!

I know this first post was much more about myself than of being of use to someone else. But hey, maybe this will also inspire you on your creative journey! I hope to create better blog posts as time goes by, and maybe even a tutorial or two every once in a while.

If you resonated with these struggles, or if you are simply interested in what I'll be coming up with, feel free to subscribe to my blog!
